We are thrilled to introduce you to… your head counselors! Also known as Rashim, these counselors will be your primary contacts in case you have any questions about your camper while they’re at camp. If you need to reach them, please call our main camp line at 707-571-7657.
Bonim / 3rd & 4th graders – Beto Salazaar
Now in his chai (18th) year at camp, Beto Salazaar has truly come full circle – starting as a Bonim camper himself, he’s now the Rosh Eidah for Bonim! Beto is most excited to “teach a new generation of campers just like me to fall in love with camp the way I did.” Fun facts about Beto? He speaks 2-1/2 languages: English, Spanish and is studying Hebrew. And he has a cute sidekick: his dog Diego.
Shoshanim / 5th & 6th graders – David Fair & Eden Friedman
Meet David Fair – our Shoshanim Rosh who comes from Baltimore and Pittsburgh and Cleveland and Chicago! Another fun fact: He loves science fiction – especially Star Trek. David is in his 2nd year of studies in the Cantorial program at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in NY and is super excited to provide some meaningful and enriching experiences for the campers and staff of Camp Newman this summer!
We’re thrilled to introduce you to Eden Friedman, who is so excited to be one of the two Rashim for Shoshanim! This Sacramento native’s fun fact? “I LOVE sharks and visiting aquariums. And I can’t wait to be surrounded by awesome Jews all summer!”
Shomrim / 6th & 7th graders – Brett Weisman & Rebekah Sherman
We’re thrilled to bring you Brett Weisman as our new Shomrim Rosh Eidah! Fun fact about Brett: “I used to be a driver and concierge for A List celebrities – like Maroon 5, Justin Timberlake and Gwen Stefani – who would come to perform in Columbus, Ohio!” Brett just spent his first year of rabbinic education in Israel along with his wife. He enjoys music, playing guitar, hiking, and lucky for him given Camp’s surroundings, the great outdoors!
Rebekah Sherman can’t wait to be back as a Rosh Eidah for Shomrim, Nitzanim & Chayim for her 11th summer at Camp Newman! Rebekah’s fun fact (and not-so-secret superpower): “I can make at least 7 different kinds of balloon animals!” She’s from Orange County, CA, a senior at University of Puget Sound in Washington – and is looking forward to an amazing summer at camp.
Tzofim / 7th & 8th graders – Marissa Friduss & Sierra Meszaros
Guess who is just as excited for Shabbat and Tammy’s brownies as your camper? Marissa Friduss! Marissa, who is from Fairhope, Alabama, joins our summer staff as Rosh Eidah to Tzofim, Gesher, and Maccabiah. She wants everyone to know that squirrels lose 80% of the nuts that they hide. Hopefully, that won’t happen to the items you pack for camp…
A Northern Nevada transplant originally from San Jose, Sierra Meszaros joins our Summer 2017 staff as a Rosh Eidah for Tzofim. She can’t wait to make new friends & have lots of belly laughs at camp with all of her Tzofim campers. Her fun fact: “I had pink hair in middle school!”
Bogrim / 9th & 10th graders – Lev Reuven
This is Lev Reuven’s 5th summer on staff at camp – and she’s super excited for her Bogrim campers to arrive. Lev is from Qiryat Atta, a town in Northern Israel near Haifa, and is starting nursing school at Hebrew University in Jerusalem in October. Lev’s fun facts: She worked and lived at camp year-round for two years, and she has a huge collection of pajamas … and you may see a few of them this summer!
Rishonim / 8th & 9th graders – Rachel Altfeld & Daniel Bernstein
Rachel Altfeld is thrilled to be here for her second summer on staff and can’t wait to meet the wonderful campers of Rishonim as their Rosh Eidah! All the way from Jackson, Tennessee, Rachel graduated last May from the University of Arizona and was a Traveling Educational Consultant for Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority last year.
Daniel Bernstein has been at camp for years – just not Newman! While he spent the last 10 summers at Gindling Hilltop Camp and Camp Hess Kramer, he is so excited to experience his first summer at Camp Newman – and finally try an “Its-It” and have another camp that he can call home. He has lots of fun facts to share:
1. I bite into kiwis when I eat them, skin and all!
2. I have a photographic memory
3. I’ve been stung by a stingray
4. I love making lists!
Hagigah / 10th & 11th graders – Aviva Frank & Emma Jaszczak
Aviva Frank, our new Hagigah Rosh was clearly born to her summer role – “[I’m] California born and raised – art and sunshine are in my bones!” She’s so excited to share her love of Judaism, glitter, musical theater, adventure, storytelling and more this summer with her Hagigah campers! Want to know a secret about her? “Come in close to the screen: (whisper) I was a cheerleader & mascot in high school. My ‘name’ was Whiney the Wildcat!”
Please welcome to our summer team … Emma Jaszczak! She’ll be a Rosh Eidah (unit head) for Hagigah and Kochavim, our art and theater specialty camps! Hailing from Tampa, Florida, she just returned from 2 years living in Israel where she volunteered teaching English and studying Jewish Education at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion – and while doing so, became an Israeli citizen!
Avodah / 11th graders – Aylon Cohen & Sarah Van Zanten
Before you read their bios below, Aylon and Sarah have something to tell you:
In his 4th summer at camp, Aylon Cohen joins Sara Van Zanten as co-Rosh Eidah of Avodah. He’s so excited for his teens to arrive this Sunday for what is “probably the best session at camp” (shhhh…don’t tell anyone else). This Israeli summer staffer is from Zichron Yaacov, near Haifa, but works year-round as a PE teacher at Yavneh Day School in Los Gatos. Fun fact: Aylon is a huge Eric Clapton fan (“he’s a guitar god… what’s not to like?”), and visited 23 U.S. states in just one, long road trip.
Sarah Van Zanten, can’t wait for our Avodaniks to show up! As Avodah Advisor (along with Aylon Cohen), some of you may know her as the Youth Director at Peninsula Temple Beth El in San Mateo. A fun fact about Sarah: “I broke a Guinness World Record but you will have to find me at camp to ask me which one!”
CIT / 12th graders – Samara Leader
This year’s CIT Director, Samara Leader, isn’t new to Newman – this is her 18th summer at camp! Samara loves hiking, spinning, and baking, and you can often find her dancing to ‘90s pop music or humming Hamilton songs. One of her favorite traditions is hiking up to the star with the CITs on the final morning of camp. During the year, Samara is our Sr. Assistant Director for Camp Newman & Sr. Regional Director for NFTY CWR | Central West Region. She’s looking forward to her chai summer!
