Porter Creek Adventure FAQ

What’s the Porter Creek Adventure?!

We are excited to announce that URJ Camp Newman’s Santa Rosa home will be clean, safe and READY FOR #NEWMANBYTHEBAY CAMPERS THIS SUMMER for one day of adventure! So with that great news, we are bringing our day-long outdoor adventure program to Porter Creek Road in summer 2019!

What does the Porter Creek Adventure include? What activities will my child engage in?

The Porter Creek Adventure will be a day-long excursion that allows all of our Newman by the Bay campers to immerse themselves in the great outdoors at our beloved Santa Rosa home. Among the redwoods on our 500-acre site, campers will enjoy all-time favorite adventures and activities, such as:

  • hiking to the Star – the ultimate Camp Newman rite of passage – and to other favorite camp spots
  • teambuilding activities and skill challenges
  • walking or frolf (frisbee golf!) tour of camp (with alternative options available)
  • playing field games, Ultimate Frisbee, and other fun group activities
  • campfires and s’mores
  • planting and gardening
  • hanging out at OKY – our Kibbutz
  • creating art to beautify camp (like art murals, mosaics, painting, etc.) and to take home
  • singing siyum, our nighttime ritual

Why are we visiting our Porter Creek home?

We’re thrilled to give all of our Newman by the Bay campers access to beautiful hikes, campfire circles, space to be surrounded by trees, and opportunities to enjoy being in nature at our Porter Creek home in Santa Rosa. Our Porter Creek home gives campers that chance – to immerse themselves in the quiet, serene, beauty of nature.

We also believe that for many of our campers and staff, especially those who have spent time at our Porter Creek home, having the opportunity to tour camp will be a powerful experience and one that begins a new stage of healing and growth – and an incredibly important way to move forward together in our journey of rebuilding camp.

What does this mean for camp’s rebuilding process?

We have an amazing group of leaders in the community working on planning the rebuilding of URJ Camp Newman. Our Master Planning Taskforce is creating the vision and master plan principles to rebuild our year-round community center and summer camp at Camp Newman. Chaired by our Advisory Board Chair Michelle Tandowsky and Rabbi Doug Kahn, the Taskforce met last September at our Porter Creek home to tour camp and conduct a visioning session, and are now split into four targeted working groups that are conducting a deep dive into specific areas, such as emergency considerations, site assessments, etc.  Our driving force is to take the best of our past 71 years and make it even better for the next 70+! Thank you for your continued patience with this process. We will apprise you of updates as we move forward!
