A (not so) Typical Day at Camp
There is really no such thing as a typical day at Camp Newman. With our wide variety of programs and activities, no day is ever the same! From sports to arts to Jewish celebrations, each camp day brings new excitement, new opportunities to build skills, and new adventures. As campers get older and move into Teen Camp and more specialized sessions, they have the opportunity to dive deeper into areas of interest by selecting a major or a track.
Through a combination of individual choice, activities by cabin and larger group gatherings, all campers learn, grow, play, connect and have fun ALL DAY!
Sample Daily Schedule >
This is an illustration of how a great Camp Newman camper spends a day, from early morning to late night. We’ll call our example camper “Charlie”
Boker Tov (Good Morning!) – Every morning Charlie wakes up to the sound of music and their counselors’ energetic greeting. Charlie gets out of bed and gets dressed for the morning. Counselors will help make sure Charlie has everything they need for the day!
Aruchat Boker (Breakfast) – Charlie and the rest of their bunk walk down to the Chadar Ochel (Dining Hall) with their counselors. The whole camp joins in singing the Motzi (the blessing said before we eat). Charlie sits with their bunk and eats some delicious scrambled eggs and hash browns. Charlie also goes to the breakfast bar for some yogurt, granola, and fresh fruit.
Z’man Eidah Boker (Morning Age-Group Time) – Charlie and the rest of their age group gather together for an exciting scavenger hunt to try and become Super Menches by finding ways to embody Jewish values like visiting the sick (At the health center), showing gratitude (to our kitchen and maintenence staff), tikkun olam (by planting a tree or picking up trash). Every day is something different that brings Judaism and Jewish values to life in an exciting, relevant way!
Chugim (Electives): Archery – Charlie got to chose from a list of electives – they’ve always wanted to try Archery – and will spend an hour a day for the next 3-4 days learning this new skill up at Adventure Mountain. Next week, Charlie will get to choose a new elective.
Chaverut (specialist-led activity by cabin): Tie-Dying – Charlie and their cabin are tie-dying their camp shirts today during Chaverut! Each day of the week will be a different chaverut activity including a hike to the star, ultimate frisbee, climbing the Alpine Tower, learning an Israeli dance … and more!
Aruchat Tzohorayim (Lunch) – Charlie sits with their bunk at lunch. Today is delicious tomato soup and grilled cheese, plus salad from the salad bar. For dessert, lemon sorbet!
Menucha (Rest Period) – Menucha is when Charlie goes back to the bunk to relax. Today Charlie is going to write a letter home about how much fun they are having and how the bunk is planning for the camp-wide talent show that evening.
Sivuv (counselor led activity by cabin) – Today, Charlie’s counselors are exited to introduce the cabin to the disc golf course all around camp. Together they hike all around, tossing their discs at various camp landmarks!
Breicha (Pool): Everyday, Charlie’s age group goes to the pool. Today, they are really exited to try the water slide and the lifeguards have some fun water games to play with the group.
Snack – Charlie and their cabinmates grab some pretzels and fruit for a midday snack.
Personal Nikayon (shower hour)– After swimming, Charlie heads back to the bunk with the counselors. Everyone showers and puts on some clean clothes for dinner and the rest of the night.
Aruchat Erev (Dinner) and Song Session -Dinner tonight is Tacos! After everyone is done eating, Charlie and friends join the songleaders and all of camp in energetic dancing and singing!
Z’man Eidah Erev (Evening activity) – Tonight is NUTS (Newman Under the Stars) the all-camp talent show and Charlie’s cabin has a super fun skit to present! Tomorrow night, they’ll be playing Night Fox (flashlight tag) and then going on their overnight camping trip the net night.
Siyum & Hashkevah (Closing Circle and Cabin Time) – Charlie gathers with the rest of their age-group for Siyum – a special nighttime song and closing circle where everyone puts arms around friends as they join together in singing Sh’ma and Hashkiveinu. It’s the perfect way to end the day. CHarlie and their cabin head back to the bunk to get ready for bed and do their final cabin time activity. Tonight they are writing themselves letters for a time capsule that will be opened at the end of the session!
Every day looks different at Camp Newman! Tomorrow, Charlie’s cabin will play field games during Sivuv and climb the Tower for Chaverut. On Saturday, there will be some more down time and free choice, Session Songs and the CIT Skit, and then Charlie will get to select their new electives for the coming week.
