Preparing for the Summer: Creating a Community of Belonging

At Camp Newman, we work hard to build a kind, inclusive community of belonging, actively disrupting discrimination in all forms. You can read more about how we approach Racial Equity Diversity and Inclusion at camp throughout the year. This work is at the heart of our Philosophy of C.A.R.E., and we invite enrolled camper families to join us in the months leading up to summer and prepare to be in community together; dive deeper into what kindness means – at camp and outside of it, to ourselves and to others – and how to engage with t’shuva (repair) when harm happens.

Enrolled camper families are encouraged to join Camp Director, Rabbi Allie Fischman, and Fresh “Lev” White, a mindfulness, mediation and diversity expert, for a series of virtual gatherings designed to help us create  a kehillah kedoshah, a holy community, at camp this summer.

Cultivating Compassion & Kindness

Tuesday, April 9 | 7:00-8:30PT

This virtual session is for everyone who will be at camp this summer: all campers and their families, faculty members, and new and returning staff members. Facilitator, Lev White, will guide us through exploring self-compassion, understanding the Jewish concept of t’shuva (repair), practicing deep listening and sharing kindness practices that mirror and inform the way we interact with each other at camp.

Belonging & Equity at Camp

This session is for BIPOC campers and their families and BIPOC parents/guardians/trusted adults of enrolled campers to connect and support each other around their hopes, expectations and concerns with raising BIPOC Jewish youth, or having their youth in predominantly white spaces.  We recognize the language of “person of color” or “BIPOC” may not capture the nuance of everyone’s identities. This session is designed to allow people who self-identify as a “person of color” or BIPOC to have a space for reflection and conversation.

Compassionate T'Shuva (Repair)

Sunday, May 5 | 4:30-6:00pm PT

What do we do when someone has harmed us? What happens when we cause harm? How do we heal, rebuild, forgive and move forward together? This virtual session is for our entire camp community – enrolled campers, their families, and staff members. This workshop is grounded in the assumption that harm will inevitably happen and will assist us in practicing accountability, doing the hard work of repairing and (re)establishing a feeling of safety through the practice of t’shuva.

Inclusion & Belonging: DIscussion on Anti-Racism

Monday, May 13 | 7:00-8:30PT

Co-facilitated by Lev White and Camp Newman Parent, Ruth Ann Binder, this virtual learning session is for our white-identified and multi-racial communities of enrolled camper families and staff.
