While at any point during summer we host 400-450 campers, we provide each one with a meaningful and memorable experience personally catered to their needs. All of the activities and programs at URJ Camp Newman are age specific. Each session at camp has its own daily schedule that allows for our campers to have a unique programmatic experience that is designed exclusively for their age group. Each day, campers get to enjoy time at the pool, the field, two cabin activities, and an activity of their choice from a list of options.
We have a policy of 24-hour supervision: There is a staff member with our campers during every activity. From playing at the pool, to meals, to going to sleep at night, staff are always on hand to supervise, help and support our campers.
We are excited to announce that this summer, we are strengthening our sports programs, scheduling more time for sports during the day and hiring dedicated coaches to give campers a great sports experience along with the rest of Camp’s magic. Along with offering special sports tracks that will give campers the opportunity to hone their skills on specific sports, we also offer campers the chance to play ultimate Frisbee, softball, baseball, gymnastics, martial arts, yoga, basketball, archery and more. Every day, campers get time to swim, play pool games, lounge or enjoy our twisty water slide. All campers are given a swim test to ensure the safety of all campers and four lifeguards are always on duty. Once per session, campers get to visit the pool at night for a special evening Pool Party.
At Adventure Mountain, campers get to test their limits on a variety of activities that are based on their skill level and age. Our facilities include a low and high ropes challenge course, rock climbing wall, alpine tower and zip line. Campers also take part in team building activities, cheering on their fellow campers to go for it!
All of our activities and programs incorporate the great outdoors and our beautiful surroundings. Camp Newman is situated on 500-acres of land, crisscrossed by our numerous hiking trails. Our “Hike to the Star” – a picture-worthy site that overlooks all of Camp Newman – is a camper favorite and right of passage. All campers get to visit and do programming at our on-site sustainable farm, Operation Kibbutz Yarok (OKY). For a detailed look at our farm facilities and programs, click here. We also have two dedicated camp sites for special overnight programs that include campfires, cookouts, and – of course – S’mores. Because our camp is far away from the glare of city lights, stargazing and star sighting is also a regular cabin activity.
Performing & Visual Arts
Campers get to explore a wide range of visual and performing arts. In addition to traditional camp arts and crafts, like tie-dying and making friendship bracelets, campers can elect to participate in drama, modern dance, video making, music, singing or photography. All campers also perform their session songs to the entire camp every Saturday night, and can perform in a camp-wide musical.
Every year, we hire two Israeli scouts who lead special Israel-themed cabin activities and other fun programs. We also have around 30 Israeli specialists and counselors each year who live in cabin and bring a taste of Israel to Camp Newman. Guided by our Israeli staff, campers get to celebrate and explore the traditions, culture, and geography of Israel.
Jewish prayers and traditions are interwoven into our daily schedule through blessings, closing circles, recognizing Jewish teachable moments, and creative Shabbat celebrations. A nightly highlight is when campers gather with their session to sing siyum, a comforting closing prayer that brings us altogether to reflect on our day and wish each other sweet dreams before we go to sleep each night.
We surprise the campers with top secret experiences—different every session! We’d say more, but we don’t want to give anything away!
