During our first two weeks with Hagigah, these creative rising 10th grade campers were on skill-learning overdrive, crafting, printing, cooking and improvising up a storm. Each camper chose one minor (hizdamnut) and one major (yitzirah) specialty, each led by an incredibly talented faculty member. Take a visual tour of their masterpieces in process:

Art Diaries – with Alissa Flores

Each camper made an “art diary,” choosing how they wanted to fill its contents – with writing, drawings, paintings, or all of the above. Every day, they would get a new topic (such as “a positive experience from camp”), and then were invited to express their feeling about the topic artistically within the diary.

Drama – with Rich Slaton

Campers in this specialty produced 3-minute comedy clips – writing the clips themselves, and then later, recording the clips to present later at the “Hagigah Festival” on July 13th!

Screen Printing – with Rabbi Peretz Wolf-Prusan

In this specialty, taught by Rabbi Peretz Wolf-Prusan – a Camp Swig alumni and former professional printmaker –  campers learned the art of screen painting and printing – and screen printed their own works for art and their own names in Hebrew.

Mosaic Making – with Isaac Brynjegard-Bialik

These 20 campers chose the concept, cut many of the mosaic pieces by hand, selected the colors, and made a stunning mosaic. To read more about it, read Isaac’s blog.

Ruben’s Salon – with Dan Nichols

During this musical session, shira lyshama, with Jewish singer, song writer and performer extraordinaire – Dan Nichols – campers got together to sing Jewish and American songs (like asher ve shamar, asher yatzar, this pretty planet) and play instruments.

Cooking – with Diana Zankowsky

Campers in this specialty learned how to read and interpret a recipe and then cook delicious Jewish delicacies, like beef and lentil soup, a traditional middle eastern Jewish soup.
