Called to Create a CARE-ing Community

What follows is an excerpt of the remarks that Rabbi Erin Mason gave upon receiving the Helen Diller Family Awards for Excellence in Jewish Education on May 17, 2017.

Camp & Our God Journeys

Having just celebrated Shavuot this week, I was reminded of this piece I wrote four years ago – and how the sentiments still ring true today. This week also coincides with our migration to camp – as we open our gates to the incredible staff, educators, clergy and community who arrive here early to prepare to welcome hundreds of Jewish children into our sacred space.

Seeing People for Who They Are: Inclusion & Transformation at Camp

Our Camp Director, Rabbi Erin Mason, explains what happened when we ran a separate summer program for those with special needs – and later, one that was fully integrated – in this Dvar Torah she gave at Congregation Beth Am last month as part of February’s Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month (JDAIM).

On Tu B’Shevat, Trees Remind Us to Stop, Listen and See

Today is Tu B’Shevat, the Jewish New Year for the trees. This morning, when I Googled “Jewish” and “Trees,” the search engine found not 1,600, not 16,000, but over 16 million stories, articles and references connecting trees to Judaism. Creating Leaders, not Bullies in Torah & at Camp

Joseph and his misadventures in this week’s Torah portion, Vayeishev, bring up themes of bullying and acceptance that I see played out today in my role as a camp leader. As the saga goes, when Joseph’s father, Jacob, shows favoritism toward Joseph, nine of Joseph’s 10 brothers, unsurprisingly, become jealous – and plot to kill him.

The Best Way We Can Prepare Our Children for Life’s Tests

A Shabbat Drash – November 25, 2016 By Loal Isaacs, Director of New Initiatives and Retreats at URJ Camp Newman   In this week’s Torah portion, Chayei Sarah, we learn about the loss of one matriarch, the death of Sarah, and the appearance of another, Eliezer’s...

Tzimtzum: Taking a Step Back to Create the World – and to Let Others Shine

In this week’s Torah portion, Bereshit, we read about God’s creation of the earth, sea, sky, plants, animals, and of course, Adam and Eve. The portion begs the question: if the universe existed in its infinite and God embodied the universe as a whole, how did God truly create the world and the space it encompasses?
