A Visual Tour of Our Hagigah Art Specialties!
During our first two weeks with Hagigah, these creative rising 10th grade campers were on skill-learning overdrive, crafting, printing, cooking and improvising up a storm. Each camper chose one minor (hizdamnut) and one major (yitzirah) specialty, each led by an incredibly talented faculty member.
What the Camp Photos Don’t Show You
For the past two weeks I have been part of the faculty at URJ Camp Newman, which affords me a unique perspective: I get to see what happens at camp as both a rabbi and a parent.
Mosaic-Making: A Microcosm of the Camp Experience
This summer at URJ Camp Newman was my eleventh in a row as an artist with Hagigah, the arts track for 10th and 11th graders. As usual, I spent a few hours a day for two weeks cutting paper with them; after all, that’s what I do in my “real” life outside camp.
Bonim’s Super Powered Week of Self Discovery
Look! Up in the Beit Am. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Bonim! Between meeting the Jewish Tzedek League, to learning Israeli dances, to pool time, our youngest cape-crusaders flew through the day tackling fun challenges and through them, discovering the essence of their own super powers.
Now Introducing…your 1B Head Counselors!
We are thrilled to introduce you to… your head counselors! Also known as Rashim, these counselors will be your primary contacts in case you have any questions about your camper while they’re at camp.
Secret Missions, Team Building & an Enchanted Forest
Here at URJ Camp Newman, we have two hot commodities: a sweeping view of the night sky and 500 acres of land to explore and hike. Each session gets to fully indulge in each of these during a special overnight program.
Our Bonim Are Superheroes, Each with Their Own Super Power
This week I have learned two pieces of Torah – one from our weekly parashah and one from campers at URJ Camp Newman.
Called to Create a CARE-ing Community
What follows is an excerpt of the remarks that Rabbi Erin Mason gave upon receiving the Helen Diller Family Awards for Excellence in Jewish Education on May 17, 2017.
Camp & Our God Journeys
Having just celebrated Shavuot this week, I was reminded of this piece I wrote four years ago – and how the sentiments still ring true today. This week also coincides with our migration to camp – as we open our gates to the incredible staff, educators, clergy and community who arrive here early to prepare to welcome hundreds of Jewish children into our sacred space.
Seeing People for Who They Are: Inclusion & Transformation at Camp
Our Camp Director, Rabbi Erin Mason, explains what happened when we ran a separate summer program for those with special needs – and later, one that was fully integrated – in this Dvar Torah she gave at Congregation Beth Am last month as part of February’s Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month (JDAIM).
