Frequently Asked Questions

Who should attend this weekend?

This weekend is for our entire beloved Saratoga/Swig/Newman family to be at our newly built Porter Creek site after it was nearly destroyed by the Tubbs fire in October 2017. There will be programming for families with children ages 2+, Young Adult Alumni (21-35), Empty Nesters, Grandparents, etc! This is not, however, a camper weekend for kids to attend without their grownups.

Shared Accommodations (Cabin):
$425/person (ages 2+)

Private Housing:

What are the housing accommodations?

Depending on the make-up of your family, your budget and the experience you are looking to have, you can choose to be in cabin, share a cabin with another family or one of our limited private rooms which sleep 2-4 people. All of these options include restrooms and showers in-house. Choose a motel-style room for up to 4 with a private bathroom, get a little more room by renting a half-cabin with room for up to 8 or bunk with extended family or a group of friends in a full-cabin with room for up to 16. All housing accommodations are recently renovated or freshly built for your comfort and enjoyment!

What should we bring?

Bring all your own linens, pillows and towels. We will send you a full packing list in advance of your weekend. Play an instrument? Bring it! And as always, bring your reusable water bottles, hat, sunscreen and sturdy shoes.

What will be offered for families? Is there childcare?

However you define a family, you are welcome at Camp Newman! Choose a motel-style room for up to 4 with a private bathroom, get a little more room by renting a half-cabin with room for up to 8 or bunk with extended family or family friends in a full-cabin with room for up to 16.
We’ll offer child programming ages 2+ on Saturday morning. Kids participate in fun camp activities while under 2 year olds can enjoy our playspace with their parents.
Enjoy Shabbat and Jewish programming together, get alone time to choose from several optional activities while kids are with counselors, have a glass of wine after the kids go to bed while counselors are on supervision duty and enjoy your meal while counselors play outside with those quick eaters!

Is evening childcare provided?

We offer late-night supervision (shmira) for all ages 8:30-11:30pm. You put your kids to bed and our staff will monitor them while you relax with friends.

Can I see the schedule?
We are new to the Camp Newman community and considering camp for next summer. Is this a good weekend for us to come to get a taste of camp?

We will have Open Houses throughout the year as well as three other weekends that would better suit you: Feb 10-12 Family Weekend, April 7-9 Passover Family Weekend or August 11-13 Taste of Camp Weekend. In October, we will be focused on welcoming camp families to reconnect with our Porter Creek site and old friends. We will be better able to give you and your future camper a taste of camp during one of these other weekends.

Can my camp-aged camper attend the weekend with out me?

This is not a camper weekend for kids to attend without their grown-ups. If your camper is looking for a bit of camp during the year, check out the NFTY weekend February 17-20 (https://campnewman.org/year-round/january-nfty-event/). We also have a Spring Camp weekend scheduled for March with more information coming soon.

What will be offered for more recent alumni and Young Adults?

Choose a motel-style room for more privacy or round up your camp friends to share a half-cabin for up to 8 or a full cabin for up to 16. Enjoy Shabbat and Jewish programming, hang out with your camp friends while on a hike, in the art room, playing Ultimate Frisbee (or cheering them from the sidelines), and at the campfire. Leave your mark on camp by painting a bench and helping with a new mosaic.

I’m done with high school but not yet 21; I want to come as a young alum participant. Do I have to bring my parents or older family members?

Close enough! If you don’t want to earn some cash by working the weekend, join us for the Young Adult price.

What will be offered for Adults?

Enjoy Shabbat and Sukkot at camp! Choose options such as hiking, cooking & challah braiding, archery, decorating our sukkah, learning with Rabbi Allie, a leave-behind art project for camp and a take-home art project for you, or simply choose to put your feet up! Sing along at a campfire, make deluxe s’mores and compete against other CIT classes at game night.

Will there be a chance to gather with my CIT/Avodah/other camp session class during the weekend?

Yes! Subject to enrollment, We’ll enjoy wine & cheese, Ultimate Frisbee, Game Night teams and other fun by alumni groupings.

I recently was a camp staff member or CIT ’22 and am interested in working that weekend? Who should I contact?

Terrific! Email Rachel Dubowe at rdubowe@urj.org.

What if I can’t come for the whole weekend?

If you’re more of a day-tripper, you’re invited to join us for an Open House on Sunday, October 16th from 10-3:30 complete with lunch and a variety of fun camp activities! The cost to attend is $36/person.

I want to attend but I don’t want to spend the night because I live locally. Can I participate fully in that way?

Sure! For a savings of $65/night ($130), you can stay locally and participate in the day’s and evening’s activities and meals. Even on a short weekend, we strive to create community among participants so if you’re staying off camp, please plan to spend as much time with us as you can!

I need a little help getting around those infamous hills at camp. Will there be mobility assistance available?

Yes! We can help you with our golf cart. Ask any staff member with a walkie-talkie and your chariot will await.

How about the food?

Our kosher-style kitchen regularly prepares vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free options at every meal. Please share other allergies and dietary needs with us so we can accommodate you. Our menus are delicious and kid friendly.  Coffee and snacks are available at all times!

Will transportation be provided to and from camp?

We are not able to provide transportation to camp for this weekend event.

If we are flying in, what is the best airport?

Oakland Airport (OAK) and Santa Rosa Airport (STS) are the most convenient airports to use when coming to camp!

What are the COVID-19 Protocols?

The health & safety of our participants is our highest concern at Camp Newman. We require all Family Camp participants to be up to date on their vaccinations including the primary series of COVID-19 vaccinations and those over 12 years or older to be boosted.  We will ask for proof of vaccination and a negative rapid test upon arriving at camp. As Covid continues to evolve, we will continue to evolve our policies and procedures. The most up-to-date requirements will be shared with you prior to your weekend.
